THE Coolidge Corner Theatre
The Coolidge Corner
Theatre is New England's most
successful independent,
not-for-profit cinema. Built as a
church in 1906, it was redesigned as
an Art Deco movie palace in 1933 and
has never closed its doors to the
public since then. Located in the
heart of Brookline, Massachusetts,
it was the community's first movie
theater and now, a non-profit
foundation since 1988, it celebrates
the experience of cinema by
presenting the finest international,
documentary, animated, and
independent film selections and
series.
The many changes
at the Coolidge in recent years have
greatly altered the perception of
the Theatre in the eyes of the
public. The Coolidge has, in fact,
experienced nothing short of a
renaissance, transforming itself
from a down-at-heel but beloved
experimental arts venue to a stable,
prosperous, and highly valued
institution in the community.
The primary
mission of the Coolidge Corner
Theatre Foundation is "to entertain,
enlighten, and engage -- building
community through film culture." We
feel that this statement is evident
and inherent in every aspect of our
work. The core of our programming is
cinema, and our goal is to show
films, as they were meant to be
seen, on the last giant silver
screen in Boston. With annual
attendance of 200,000 individuals,
the Coolidge serves a diverse
community audience. Membership
currently stands at 2800 while a
growing email list helps attract new
audiences within the local community
and beyond.
The cultural
programs and services that we
present vary widely and are designed
to appeal to and engage the diverse
communities living in the Boston
area. Sample programming includes:
- showcasing
independent, locally produced
work by emerging filmmakers
- creating
discounted-admission series
geared toward seniors ($3.00
Senior Matinee), and new parents
(Box Office Babies, where
parents are invited to bring
infants under one year)
- presenting
films and film series to
underserved communities
- hosting a
number of film/video festivals
co-presented with other
non-profit organizations (e.g.,
the Boston Jewish Film Festival
held each November)
- working with
Brookline Booksmith, a local
award-winning independent
bookstore, in hosting
world-renowned writers
- exploring
fresh perspectives on ways to
utilize film (e.g. dance on
film, opera on film, found
footage)
- Educational
outreach programs, including
Teen Summer Programs (Narrative
Storytelling, Documentary Film,
and Flash Animation), Film
Appreciation Seminars, Members
Film Club, etc.
As a culturally
significant institution, we have
dramatically increased awareness of
our cinema. Through the kind of
"movie plus" programming and
outreach, we have shown that we are
a vital component of this region's
cultural offerings. This is
evidenced by increased membership
and individual support, corporate
underwriting, and the enthusiasm of
other organizations to work in
collaboration with the Coolidge
Corner Theatre Foundation.
The Theatre has
received numerous awards and
commendations in recent years,
reaffirming our impact and status in
the community. To view a selection
