Now here’s the whole story: I get to subtitle most of the operas here at Opera in Cinema. Some are more difficult than others – Verdi’s Falstaff was trouble, for instance, because of the complicated passages of polyphony wherein everybody’s singing different text. Subtitling Tosca was difficult for a completely different reason: I would get so sucked into the performance that I would forget what I was doing and just watch the opera, my jaw slack and my eyes bugging out (and my fingers not doing any subtitling). So, suffice to say, this production is a true tour-de-force all around. SEE IT, SEE IT, SEE IT! And I’m sorry if the subtitles are a little sloppy.

The Shakespeare in Cinema series kicks off on September 1st with Love’s Labour’s Lost from Shakspeare’s Globe Theatre, London. Critics laud this production:

“Dominic Dromgoole’s zestful production succeeds in captivating the audience to a degree that I would not have thought possible… It’s a treat” –The Independent

“Sends its audience out in a mood of high exultation” –Observer

“As dewy as a morning in May…this production lands every joke” –The New York Times

“With a delightful design and jaunty music it has abundant charm… Entirely enchanting” — The Times

About Love’s Labour’s Lost:

When the King of Navarre and his three courtiers forswear all pleasure – particularly of the female variety – in favor of a life of study, the arrival of the Princess of France and her ladies plays havoc with their intentions.

Using every kind of verbal gymnastics to poke fun, Shakespeare’s most intellectual comedy is brought to hilarious life in Dominic Dromgoole’s highly entertaining production, rich in visual humour and sexual innuendo. Jonathan Fensom’s knot garden and original music by Claire van Kampen create the framework for an engaging performance by an excellent cast.

From Academy Award® nominated documentarian Marshall Curry, RACING DREAMS is a coming-of-age story that takes us into the lives of Annabeth (11 years old), Josh (12), and Brandon (13) as they compete for the championship in the World Karting Association’s National Series. Too young to have licenses, but clocking speeds of up to 70 mph, these young drivers race their way through the year-long competition while they navigate the treacherous road between childhood and young adulthood. In intimate moments of young love and family struggle, this exciting and poignant film has been described as “part Catcher in the Rye, part Talladega Nights” and compared to documentary classics like Hoop Dreams and Spellbound.

When Henry’s not dancing alone to obscure music or singing operettas, he’s performing – with great panache – the duties of an “extra man”, a social escort for the wealthy widows of Manhattan high society. These two men, separated in age by more than forty years, develop a volatile mentor/apprentice relationship; forming a memorable bond that bridges their differences.

Emotionally engaging and starkly beautiful, LAST TRAIN HOME’s intimate observation sheds light on the human cost of China’s ascendance as an economic superpower.

Run by film fans, for film fans, to create generations of new film fans, Cape Ann Community Cinema is one of Emerging’s most passionate advocates for the importance of digital cinema and power of the movie-going experience. Forty miles north of Boston, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, America’s oldest seaport, CACC has been bringing the best of independent and classic cinema from the U.S. and around the world to local audiences who might not otherwise discover them, all in an intimate, living room style setting that prompted renowned actress-turned-director Liv Ullmann to exclaim, “Bergman would have loved this place!”

Ever watch a silent film with a live score performed right in the theater? Ever get to ask an Oscar- winning filmmaker what he was thinking when he shot a scene in a particular way? Ever bring a picnic basket into a theater without fear of it being confiscated and you being sent to movie jail for such a heinous affront? You can do all those things and more at the CACC.

The person behind the diverse film schedule is managing director and former film critic Rob Newton, who you can find most days on the couch in the corner in the back of the theater. Unlike the neighborhood multiplex or theatre chains, all programming decisions for CACC are made right in the very theater in which film-goers will enjoy them. Newton brings hundreds of titles to this single screen every year, and Cape Ann consistently invites filmmakers for post-screening Q&As and discussions. Newton and his team are currently planning the lineup for the annual Cape Ann Film Festival, taking place this year from October 1-17 at Cape Ann Community Cinema.

In addition to offering a place for movie fans to gather, CACC is always developing new concepts for film series and themed mini-fests, including a homegrown community cinema concept which Newton plans to launch as OurTown Cinemas in 2011. And if all this wasn’t enough, Cape Ann Community Cinema welcomes creative input from the most important people to them – their patrons – another reason why we’re proud to have them in the Emerging network.

In writer/director Todd Solondz’s part sequel/part variation on his acclaimed film HAPPINESS, three sisters and the people they love struggle to find their places in an unpredictable and volatile world where the past haunts the present and imperils the future. The question of forgiveness and its limits threads throughout a series of intersecting love stories, offering clarity and, perhaps, alternatives to the comforts of forgetting. Ten years have passed since a series of shocking and catastrophic revelations shattered the world of the Jordan family. Now, ghosts circle and loom, trouble and console as sisters Joy (Shirley Henderson), Trish (Allison Janney), and Helen (Ally Sheedy) are each embroiled in their own unique dilemmas. As these characters and storylines dovetail, expand and collide, they create an emotionally resonant portrait of prisoners of love and life.

It’s New York, 1979. Gabriel Richmond is a talented architect with a seemingly rich life as he has a caring wife, loving daughter and life long friends. Yet, he spends most days in the movie theater, hiding out from work, escaping into a fictional world where he can more readily relate to the made up characters. When fiction shines a mirror on his own life, an inspired Gabriel begins writing a play not-so-loosely based on his reality, examining all of the relationships that make his life what it is.

Jack Rebney is the most famous man you’ve never heard of — an RV salesman whose hilarious, foul-mouthed outbursts circulated underground on VHS tapes in the 90s before turning into a full-blown Internet phenomenon in 2005. Today, the “Winnebago Man” has been seen by more than 20 million people worldwide, and is regarded as one of the first and funniest viral videos. Filmmaker Ben Steinbauer goes in search of Rebney — and finds him living alone on a mountain top, unaware of his fame. WINNEBAGO MAN is a laugh-out-loud look at viral culture and an unexpectedly poignant tale of one man’s response to unintended celebrity.
