Jura zeros in on the essentials of espresso with its Jura A1 superautomatic espresso machine.
What do you get when pure, clean water is heated to just the right temperature and pushed with just enough pressure through fresh, evenly ground espresso? You get arguably one of the most delicious forms of extracted coffee: the espresso shot.
Jura has taken away all of the fluff and focused on creating the perfect environment for the process of espresso extraction. With the A1, Jura has ensured the water is hot, the grounds are fine, and the pressure is strong.
Is it Worth Your Money?
If you prefer a variety of quality and milk-based espresso beverages, the E8 could be considered quite the bargain. It includes Jura’s latest brewing technology to ensure a perfect shot is extracted every time. It is also easy to maintain.
For filter replacement and descaling, a built-in RFID chip is at the ready to let you know exactly when your water filter needs changing. Both of these features have been introduced in the newest and much more expensive ﹘﹘ the brand’s models, with some currently selling for more than double the price of this product.
Detailed Review and Breakdown
Put some P.E.P. in Your Step
It uses Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.Ⓡ) — a brewing technology so exclusive that it requires its trademark. P.E.P. forces water through coffee in pulsating intervals for optimal extraction time. Professional baristas aim for an extraction time of 20 to 30 seconds; I tested this with the unit and got an extraction time of 24 seconds. This timing allows for a robust, full-bodied drink with an optimal level of crema (that gorgeously modest layer of foam that signals a quality shot).
Control Over Milk Froth
Connoisseurs will love the product’s adjustable dial for milk froth. This feature allows you to have control over whether you want the fluffy froth of a cappuccino or a modest layer for a latte. I found this option to be ideal for making the perfect flat white ﹘﹘ a delicious but often overpriced beverage that is similar to a latte.
Jura’s revolutionary Intelligent Water System (I.W.S.Ⓡ) contains a built-in RFID chip that lets you know when your filter needs to be replaced. This technology prevents scale and other substances from building up in your unit, thus increasing your its longevity. The filtration system also makes for excellent water quality and taste.
There’s no use crying over spilled milk – spoiled milk on the other hand…
The unit’s automatic rinse system keeps the milk frothing device clean by performing a rinse automatically 10 minutes after you make any type of milk-based beverage. It also includes a milk cleaning solution for deeper cleaning.
- 16 brewing cycles
- Width = 11 inches; depth = 17 inches; height = 13.5 inches
- Bean hopper capacity of 12 ounces
- Plastic exterior with stainless steel band around boiler
- Model number: E8
- Cup clearance of 2.5-4.5 inches
Ease of Use and Reliability
Thanks to Jura’s Intelligent Water System, keeping it clean is a breeze. As far as reliability is concerned, this technology is optimal for preventing scaling buildup from causing your device to malfunction. It also really nails it thanks to an automatic cleaning mechanism that rinses the milk frothing device 10 minutes after making any milk-based drink.
But it isn’t just the water that’s smart. It also has automatic bean detection and easy customizable options via a simple menu system. The system offers eight strength settings to fit your specific tastes. Very few units offer this many options, with most offering a maximum of three options. Dosing options range from 5-16 grams (side note: 16 grams is the optimal amount of grinds you need for a true double espresso).
Thanks to a bevy of the aforementioned program options, the product delivers a dynamite cappuccino, macchiato, flat white and more. And with P.E.P. technology, you can rely on a perfect drink with the simple touch of a button.
Cost-wise, it’s a great value if you’re looking for a variety of high-quality drinks and minimal cleanup time. The model uses Jura’s most advanced technology to date, while also costing less than several of the company’s comparable units. It doesn’t even cap the $2,000 mark, whereas other models like the Impressa Z9 and the J90 Chrome both do.
Overall, the E8 is a great device that is a dream come true for aficionados who are tired of shelling out their pennies at shops. I will say that ﹘﹘ when it comes to making a regular black coffee ﹘﹘ I prefer my good old Mr. Coffee. Even on the lightest setting, the drink was a bit bitter for my taste. However, when it comes to any other types, it seems able to perfect pretty much everything under the sun.
The two features that make it worth the price is P.E.P. and I.W.F. technologies. Getting a perfect drink from the comfort of your own home means less time fighting traffic, waiting in long lines and potentially being late for work. The cleaning technology also reduces labor time and is hassle-free.
However, if you’re looking for little more than a great cup and the occasional latte, this product is not for you. Some users have also complained that the milk temperature is not high enough for their liking, or tends to cool down quickly.
Other Options Worth Looking At
Although this product is a great value, the Jura Impress F7 is over $300 less if you want a quality unit with fewer frills. The F7 is excellent for people who want a good cup and occasionally would like a milk-based beverage. So if you’re looking for a more minimalist option that delivers a great cup of joe at the touch of a button, this model could be for you.
The Gaggia 1003380 Accademia is great for a more substantial household of drinkers or office spaces. It can make up to 10 cups and also delivers quality milk-based beverages. Its materials include metal and stainless steel, making this a durable and robust model that won’t easily be broken.
Finally, if the price is no concern, consider the DeLonghi America Prima Donna Fully Automatic unit. The Prima Donna a gorgeous silver model that doubles as a mindreader. The memory function allows you to save preferred setting so that you can have a fully customized drink whenever you want it. You also don’t have to worry about with the Prima Donna. The milk carafe is designed to be removed and placed in the refrigerator for later.
