Unity has officially launched tools for visionOS, Apple’s new operating system designed for its Vision Pro spatial computing headset. This support enables developers to utilize Unity’s development tools and workflows to create immersive experiences for the Vision Pro.
This announcement comes just ahead of the Vision Pro headset’s launch on February 2, 2024. Unity’s templates, samples, and resources will assist developers in leveraging the headset’s capabilities through Unity’s PolySpatial technology, allowing for a seamless integration of digital content with the physical world.
Last year, Unity collaborated with Apple on a beta program that provided creators early access to develop apps for the Vision Pro, enabling studios across various industries to be among the first to deliver innovative spatial computing applications.
One such studio is Light Brick Studios, founded by former LEGO designers, which plans to release its critically acclaimed game, LEGO Builder’s Journey, on the Vision Pro at launch. Mikkel Fredborg, Light Brick’s technical lead, noted that Unity’s support has been instrumental in adapting their well-known workflow to this new type of system, unlocking the Vision Pro’s unique interaction and rendering capabilities.
Another studio creating a launch title for the Vision Pro using Unity is Resolution Games, known for popular VR titles like Demeo and Blaston. CEO Tommy Palm highlighted that Unity’s multi-platform support and comprehensive tools for spatial computing development simplify the process of transitioning existing games to the Vision Pro and taking advantage of its unique features.
Beyond gaming, Unity’s visionOS support is being utilized by Audi for an interactive Virtual Exhibit XR that showcases its vehicle technology, by the TRIPP meditation app, and by Triband to adapt its popular game, What The Golf, for the new device.
Marc Whitten, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Unity, expressed enthusiasm about supporting developers as they innovate in this new era of spatial computing. “We are the first third-party platform to offer visionOS support,” he stated.
The visionOS support is now available in Unity 2022 LTS for all Unity Pro, Enterprise, and Industry subscribers. This support aims to alleviate concerns regarding the absence of apps on the new platform.
